CloudFiles is supported in Salesforce professional edition. You don't have to buy the API add-on too. However, automation capabilities which are available in the Salesforce Enteprise edition are not available in Professional edition. This is due to the limitation enforced by Salesforce profession edition.

You will be able to use the CloudFiles lightning web component in professional edition and integrate external file storage in Salesforce. You can perform all file and folder operations like upload/download/view/delete etc. from the CloudFiles component.
